Hospitality Training off to flying start
Northern Futures Hospitality training is off to a flying start with 17 trainees commencing in 2011. Eight trainees are at the Gordon Institute of TAFE working towards a Certificate II in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) which will finish in March 2012. The trainees are studying three days a week with another day a week reserved for site visits with industry partners or personal development. The trainees are learning skills that will allow them to work in a commercial kitchen as a kitchen hand or apprentice cook or to continue on with their education and complete a Certificate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery).
The other nine trainees are at the WharfShed Cafe whose manager Peter Temple has been a great supporter of the Northern Futures program. These nine trainees are undertaking a Certificate II in Hospitality with William Angliss Institute of TAFE and are training and working at the Wharfshed cafe.
The initial support by the hospitality industry has been overwhelmingly positive with several high profile Geelong hospitality businesses committing to the program. The Mercure Hotel, Truffleduck (Balmoral Receptions) and Buckleys Entertainment Centre have already given the Gordon trainees the pleasure of visiting their businesses this year and are offering work experience to the trainees when they finish in 2012. The trainees have also been able to participate in mock interviews with the Mercure Hotel which is an integral part of the program as interviews are often a source of anxiety and awkwardness for most people. This means that when they get to the real thing they will be much better prepared.
The next hospitality course will begin in early 2012.
