Pathways to a Brighter Future Realised
Northern Futures has welcomed the announcement by the Federal Government of over $355,000 to fund training and education opportunities for long term unemployed individuals within the Corio Norlane area.
Pathways to a Brighter Future is a collaborative partnership between the Northern Futures initiative, local government, local industry, Employment Service Providers and education and training providers to provide a flexible, tailored training program for Geelong’s 3214 community.
Northern Futures Executive Officer, Lou Brazier, welcomed the announcement by Federal Member for Corio, the Hon Richard Marles MP and said the program provides a ‘hands on’ approach to the skills training and employment process.
“Long term unemployment and generational disadvantage are particular issues in Geelong’s northern suburbs and recent research has shown that over 75% of longer term jobseekers face a significant barrier to permanent employment because of a lack of basic education, social barriers and/or behavioural and attitude issues,” she said.
Ms Brazier said, “While we acknowledged there are service provisions for the long term unemployed that already extend into the Corio Norlane areas, this program addresses the particularly high need, long term unemployed individuals who often require more intensive support that traditional service providers are not always equipped or resourced enough to provide.”
“Pathways to a Brighter Future will see dedicated staff who will commit time and resources to provide support and help manage and overcome the day to day barriers that often prevent long term unemployed from successfully participating in existing training programs.”
“The funding will see staff available to be on call to manage issues immediately and as they arise so that ‘drop out’ rates are minimised and participating individuals have the best chance of gaining their qualification and moving into ongoing employment,” she said.
Northern Futures Chairperson Peter Dorling said “The program provides intensive; on call support to high need long term unemployed individuals within the Corio Norlane area to effectively manage them through a tailored education pathway and into sustained employment. At the same time, the program meets the needs of local industry by addressing skills shortages in Aged Care, Hospitality and Transport & Logistics”.
“With Northern Futures as the project manager, the program team will be located in the heart of Geelong’s northern suburbs and as such will have an intimate knowledge of the issues and opportunities that face the community there” Mr. Dorling said. “Northern Futures is very appreciative of the role Elaine Robb, CEO Encompass Community Services, played in bringing this program to fruition”.
