Premier kicks goals in Geelong’s North
Northern Futures has welcomed the announcement by Premier, Ted Baillieu that Geelong’s Northern suburbs will be one of the first two areas in the state to receive funding for a new Work and Learning Centre.
The funding of $4.6million will be used to roll out five Work and Learning Centres that are modelled on a successful program run by the Brotherhood of St Laurence in Fitzroy that has helped more than 500 people move down the pathway to stable employment.
Northern Futures Executive Officer, Lou Brazier, welcomed the announcement by Premier Baillieu and said she was thrilled that Geelong’s northern suburbs were among the first to be recognized by the new government for this program.
“The program in Fitzroy has worked directly with local public housing residents giving them the skills to get to the job interview room and then to step into stable employment.
“It’s exactly the sort of program we need here, for people who have little work experience or are new to the area or the country and just need that extra bit of help to succeed in the workforce.
“I am grateful to the Premier and to local MP David Koch who helped secure the funding and can assure them it will go to good use in Geelong’s North.
“The program in Fitzroy has helped over 500 people in the community where they live and we will be aiming for that sort of success here.” said Ms Brazier.
Chairman of Northern Futures Peter Dorling said he was thrilled that the Baillieu Government had tackled Geelong’s North as one of its first areas to be allocated funding for the new program.
“We know that we have around twice the levels of unemployment in the north than we do in the rest of Geelong, but we also know that some of the basic things that we can do will make a real difference."
“Getting peoples interview and CV writing skills up to scratch can really help people get over the line and this funding will allow that training to be delivered in the communities that will benefit from this training.” said Mr Dorling.
