Northern Futures Launches Its Strategic Plan
Northern Futures officially launched its strategic plan on the 2nd March 2009 at the Geelong Harness Racing Club in Corio.
Launched by Federal Member of Corio Richard Marles MP and State Member for Lara, John Eren MP, the plan titled 'The Way Forward: A Strategic Plan for Social Transformation (2009-2013)' will act as a blueprint for the initiative as it works towards strengthening the community and economy of the 3214 suburbs.
Mr John Eren MP said that the launch of the Northern Futures five-year Strategic Plan is more than an aspirational document, but rather a roadmap that will lead to real and sustainable change for the 3214 area.
"The objectives and strategies set out in the Plan are certainly challenging, but will provide the necessary framework to redress the issues that have contributed to making the 3214 area of Geelong significantly disadvantaged compared to the rest of the State," Mr Eren said. "The objective is to help break cycles of unemployment, improve education levels and job skills and advocate issues for the 3214 suburbs."
"The Northern Futures initiative will play a vital role in ensuring that the voice of the 3214 community is heard and narrow the gap between the people of 3214 and the rest of the State."
Federal Member for Corio, Richard Marles MP, said the Strategic Plan should be seen as a 'living' document that will continue to evolve as the initiative moves forward.
"Northern Futures is still relatively new but it has already made some important in-roads in bringing about positive change for Geelong's 3214 suburbs," Mr Marles said. "The Steering Committee that leads the initiative plans to build upon this Strategic Plan over the coming years as more partnerships are secured and more projects are implemented."
"We see Northern Futures as being consistent with Prime Minister Rudd's wider social inclusion agenda where all levels of government will be encouraged to implement policies that will help empower individuals and strengthen opportunities in Geelong's Northern Suburbs and encourage a successful and sustainable community."
The Plan outlines the three broad Action Areas that Northern Futures aims to address - Supporting Economic Growth; Linking Labour Supply; and Strengthening Education and Training. Each of these action areas include a number of strategies with information on how Northern Futures is already involved and what further opportunities exist.
