Vehicle Modification Specialists
For Philip Royce, hiring an apprentice for his company was one of the best business decisions he’s ever made. The managing director of Vehicle Modification Specialists, (a vehicle repair and refurbishment company based in North Geelong) credits his decision to the Northern Futures initiative for helping him find his apprentice, twenty year old Daniel O’Hara.
After attending several Northern Futures employer/ providers forums Mr. Royce knew that the partners involved with the initiative would be able to help when the need arose for his company to hire an apprentice. “They set me up with two or three great candidates but there was one that shone through and that was Daniel” said Mr. Royce. “I could tell right away that he was a wonderful young fellow”. “I was looking for an apprenticeship but I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do” said Daniel. “I read about the apprenticeship at VMS and went to Mentor Training who put me through to Northern Futures. It only took me a week to get a job. I’ve been very lucky”.
Since joining the team at Vehicle Modification Specialists a year ago Daniel has been training in his vehicle body building apprenticeship. He has been involved in some major projects such as the refurbishment of vehicles at The Werribee Zoo and the Vic Roads Mobile Laboratory. At all times Daniel has proven himself more than capable. “Daniel has shown that he can work at a level above and beyond the average apprentice. He has a great work ethic and attitude to work and has the ability to listen to his peers. He will go far” said Mr. Royce. After completing his vehicle body building apprenticeship Daniel hopes to continue his learning by obtaining qualifications in welding and spray painting. “The team at VMS has always made me feel so welcome. I really feel like a valued member of the team. It makes me enjoy coming to work,” Daniel said.
Mr. Royce’s experience with Daniel has been so positive he is looking forward to hiring another apprentice. “When the time comes I will definitely go through the Northern Futures network again. They set me up with a terrific apprentice this time and they definitely know how to find the right candidate”.
